Spontaneous Musical Numbers Sign

IMG_8793.JPG

Quiet off stage! Yep you guessed it, it’s that time of year again! Time for fall musicals to begin performing for the public! At my school it is opening weekend for our performance of Willy Wonka and I am in the musical mood. So I decided to make a musical sign for all my musical theater nerds out there! And what’s one thing that all musicals have in common? Spontaneous musical outbreaks full of singing and dancing! So today I’m going to show you how to make a super creative and stage appropriate sign that all theater departments will love and relate with. Action!

Supplies:

  • Cardboard
  • Black, Red, & Yellow felt
  • Black, Red, & Yellow thread
  • Sewing needle and pins
  • Theater quote
  • Scissors

Steps:

  • First take your cardboard and cut out a rectangle that is 11 1/2 inches tall, and 8 inches wide.IMG_8723.JPG

  • Next take your black felt and cut it so it covers the whole cardboard and has extra to fold over the sides. Then take some pins and pin down your sides. Now take your needle and black thread and sew the black felt onto the cardboard.

  • Once your cardboard is covered take your red felt and draw the shape of the side of a curtain. After that cut out your shape and trace another one on the felt so you have two identical curtains. Then draw another shape for the bottom of the curtain, cut it out, and make a second one. IMG_8733.JPG

  • Now we’re going to make the ceiling curtain. For this just draw three swoops connected so it looks like a curtain and then leave 2 straight sides connected to that.

  • We’re now going to begin sewing our curtains on. Start with your ceiling curtain and position it at the very top of your sign. Then pin it down and sew it into place using the red thread.

  • Next we’re going to sew the bottom curtains on. Position your curtains in the bottom two corners and then again pin them down and sew them on with the red thread.

  • The last curtains we’re going to sew are the top main curtains. Position them in the top two corners, pin them down, and using red thread again sew them into place.

  • Now we’re going to make the tassels to hold the curtains. Cut a inch of yellow fabric out to be the strap and then cut another inch out to be the tassels. To make the tassels take your scissors and cut into the fabric to make little strips. Then fold the tassel over and sew it onto the other yellow strip using your white thread.

  • Once your tassels are sewn together you’re going to pin them right where the bottom and top curtain meet. Then sew them in place using white thread again.

  • After you’ve cut out your words we’re going to sew it onto the black area of the sign. When pinning it down only put one pin in the four corners as the holes will be noticeable since it’s paper. Also use your red thread when sewing your paper because you want to be able to see it.

  • After you have sewed everything onto your board your sign is now complete!

Cut! That’s a wrap everyone you have now sewn and designed your own crafty musical sign. Now you can either put it up in your room to show your love for musical theater or even find a place for it in your own theater department! Or maybe even take your own spin off my designs and make more unique signs! Break a leg!
